Are Frozen Veggies as Good as Fresh Veggies for your Baby?

If you know anything about healthy eating, you know that a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables are a staple in a healthy diet. The same is true for your kiddo’s diet, at any stage. Raw fruits and vegetables have no added ingredients or preservatives, and they are full of nutrients and fiber. With much of the conversation around healthy food only speaking to fresh produce, frozen produce gets unjustly lumped into the preserved food category. Some canned and shelf-stable fruits and vegetables have added preservatives, sugars and lose nutritional value over time. Yet, not only is freezing is a natural way to preserve food without added ingredients, but also, modern freezing techniques preserve and capture food at the peak of its freshness and nutrient content.

When weighing the benefits of Frozen vs. Fresh Vegetables for homemade baby food, there are three considerations:  taste, nutrition, and convenience. Factors such as growing seasons and the distance fresh foods travel to you affect both the quality of nutrition and taste. Also, nutrition and taste are often compromised for convenience, which is the case with many shelf stable baby food products.

So yes, you can make baby food with frozen vegetables without compromising on taste, nutrition or convenience and without adding preservatives to your baby’s meal.

FROZEN IS TASTY & HEALTHY

Produce picked at peak ripeness yields the best taste and nutritional value. So if you live on a farm or have a garden, good for you!  Much produce is only ripe for a few months during the year, leaving little time to benefit from the optimal taste and nutrition. Because of the distance from farm to table, much produce has to be picked in advance of ripening, compromising taste and nutrient density. In some cases, frozen vegetables are actually better quality than many fresh vegetables because flash freezing captures and preserves food at the peak of their freshness and nutrient content for up to a year.

FROZEN IS CONVENIENT & ECONOMICAL

Often, fresh and refrigerated foods are prone to spoiling before having a chance to be consumed. In an ideal world we would all meal plan, all the time, and this would never happen. But, how realistic is that? Frozen means less wasted food due to spoiling fresh food thus less money wasted. Frozen veggies are also conveniently prepped with the peeling and chopping out of the way. Frozen means  access to well-balanced, portion-controlled nutritious meals in every season. If your kids are anything like ours, an “average” portion changes on any given day. The best part about frozen is that unused product can be placed back in the freezer for later use instead of being thrown away.
